My Place on the Internet
Hi. I'm Charles McGarvey, and this is my personal site devoted to my interests and the things I do. You could know me under one of my several pseudonyms. In the "real world," most people call me Chaz. If you play games online, you might have known me as NedDivine or Hitchhiker. In other areas of the Internet, I use the moniker onefriedrice to share my conservative (but not boring), pro-capitalism opinions, while at the same time pursuing my interest in open source software. No, I'm not joking on that last one; I am living proof that it is possible to advocate conservative politics and free software at the same time. You may also have known me under some other name; like worn out clothes, I tend to discard old nicknames in favor of new ones from time to time.
Did I mention that open source software is really great? It is. These are some of my favorite projects that I may contribute to on occasion:
I also write software for Fun and Profit. I used to have a Mac, so I wrote some software for Mac OS X to help keep me sane during my high school years. It only worked marginally well--keeping me sane, that is. Nowadays I enjoy writing games. Currently, I'm spending some of my free time restoring an old game I once enjoyed named Yoink. I've also written a particularly clever rant (you know when I'm being sarcastic, right?) on the topic of open source licenses where I take the position against the GPL. I do happen to think the GPL is quite overrated.
Apart from software, another love of mine is the Great Outdoors. Hiking and swimming are my most cherished pastimes. I also enjoy God and the study of spiritual things--no joke. In fact, I'm one of those crazy Mormons, so watch out. The craziest, funnest, and most awesome thing I've ever done is take a break from school for two years to preach the gospel in the Philippines! I'm also lucky to have had the privilege. Finally, I am also an award-winning checkers player, as long as taking third place in an elementary school tournament counts for anything. Okay, that last one was more like a "fun fact," but I'm not embarrassed to remain particularly proud of that accomplishment.
